Then and Now

I find this an interesting observation comparing the words from the men who wrote our constitution to the words of our current national leaders who have pledged to preserve and protect our constitution.

Harmony, liberal intercourse with all Nations, are recommended by policy, humanity and interest. But even our Commercial policy should hold an equal and impartial hand: neither seeking nor granting exclusive favours or preferences; consulting the natural course of things; diffusing and diversifying by gentle means the streams of Commerce, but forcing nothing; establishing with Powers so disposed; in order to give trade a stable course.
George Washington

I think when you spread the wealth around its good for everybody.
Barack Obama

The same prudence which in private life would forbid our paying our own money for unexplained projects, forbids it in the dispensation of the public moneys.
Thomas Jefferson

I've got two daughters. 9 years old and 6 years old. I am going to teach them first of all about values and morals. But if they make a mistake, I don't want them punished with a baby.
Barack Obama

It is not necessary to enumerate the many advantages, that arise from this custom of early marriages. They comprehend all the society can receive from this source; from the preservation, and increase of the human race. Every thing useful and beneficial to man, seems to be connected with obedience to the laws of his nature, the inclinations, the duties, and the happiness of individuals, resolve themselves into customs and habits, favourable, in the highest degree, to society. In no case is this more apparent, than in the customs of nations respecting marriage.
Samuel Williams

I opposed the Defense of Marriage Act in 1996. It should be repealed and I will vote for its repeal on the Senate floor. I will also oppose any proposal to amend the U.S. Constitution to ban gays and lesbians from marrying.
Barack Obama

America will be far safer if we reduce the chances of a terrorist attack in one of our cities than if we diminish the civil liberties of our own people.
Nancy Pelosi

Liberty must at all hazards be supported. We have a right to it, derived from our Maker. But if we had not, our fathers have earned and bought it for us, at the expense of their ease, their estates, their pleasure, and their blood.
John Adams

As I read the words of our founders and then read the words those who today we have charged to represent us, I find a stark and shocking degradation of moral and virtuous standards. Our leaders speak of liberty but have no alignment with the principles of liberty.

Are we all so blind with politics and health care and bailouts and stimulus to miss the fundamental misalignment of our leaders with our Constitution and founding principles? We are all focused on the wrong issues!

Consider we as Americans have spent too much time in the pursuit of happiness and not enough time in the business of self governing, or are we all too busy or simply say “someone else will do it, I just don’t’ have time to get involved. And besides what can I do?”

I say, “Look at what we have done! Nothing!” It is we who must preserve and protect our liberty. It is our duty to this country and to all those who have bled and died for it. Our economy is healthy compared to the immoral and ill-virtuous condition of our leaders. I submit that should be our focus.
